Rajasthan - an erstwhile state of India is a land inextricably associated with royalty and the pomp and splendor surrounding it. It is known for its numerous and powerful kingdoms, majestic forts and palaces, diverse culture, varied landscapes and vibrant colours, making rail travel through Rajasthan a magical experience. The Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation Ltd., spurred on by the immense success of Palace on Wheels, modelled a brand new train along the same lines and called it Royal Rajasthan on Wheels. The train commenced its first journey on 11 January, 2009 with an endeavour to provide the discerning traveller a truly royal experience. The twenty five years of experience gained in operating the Palace on Wheels, was put to optimum use by RTDC. No effort was spared in terms of furnishings, services and facilities in order to make this classic rail journey a memorable one for its guests. An applaudable step forward was the inclusion of a super deluxe coach which consists of two super luxurious suites. The highlight of this journey is the royal voyage and princely treatment each passenger gets along with the luxury of international standards. The treasure of images and impressions that one experiences within a short span of seven days are bound to last a lifetime. The train commences its week long journey from New Delhi, covering Jodhpur, Udaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Jaipur, Khajuraho, Varanasi and Agra before returning to New Delhi in a seven nights eight days royal extravaganza. The special feature of this particular train journey is the addition of the Khajuraho temples - a unique gift to the world; and also Varanasi - the holy city, known for its temples and ghats. These two cities showcase yet another side of the Indian subcontinent.

The train has fourteen coaches, of which, thirteen are deluxe and one super deluxe. Each deluxe coach is named after a royal palace; they being - Hawa Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Surya Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sukh Mahal, Jal Mahal, Padmini Mahal, Kishori Mahal, Phool Mahal, Jogi Mahal, Kumbha Palace, Lalgarh Palace and Umaid Palace. The super deluxe coach is suitably named after the Taj Mahal, keeping in mind the uniqueness of the Taj in Indian history. The distinguishing factor of Royal Rajasthan on Wheels is that interiors have been designed to reflect the highest standard of royal lifestyles, each coach having a theme inspired by the palace after which it is named. The exterior of the train is a lovely combination of royal blue with rich red stripes at the bottom. Each coach carries a royal emblem, representative of the state after which it is named. The train, with its interconnected coaches, is a magnificent sight to behold as it stands at the platform in all its grandeur and then chugs along smoothly across the countryside. There are three cabins within every deluxe coach, each in the hue of an opulent jewel, namely, ruby, sapphire and pearl. The exquisite silk and textured furnishings are matched to the furniture, comprising of a twin bed, a writing table and a chair, to provide a harmonious and colour coordinated composition. The use of exquisite silk and velvet furnishings, inspired by fabrics and designs used by kings in their living rooms and bed rooms, along with finely carved period furniture is the hallmark of this exclusive coach, transporting one back in time to the royal styles of an era gone by. All the cabins come with satellite television and an attached bath, equipped with a shower, hot and cold running water and toiletries of international standards.
