Maharaja, a word of Sanskrit origin, is a title for a great ruler or great king - all powerful and a class apart. Welcome aboard the Maharajas’ Express, the king of all trains, undoubtedly reputed as the most luxurious train in India. Owned by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC), all passengers aboard this train are treated as kings and queens while they travel in the lap of luxury, enabled by state of the art facilities with the latest technological support of international standards. Almost half a mile long, this majestic locomotive redefines the concept of classic rail travel, recreating the ambience and lifestyle of an era gone by. An epitome of luxurious splendour, the Maharajas’ Express is unique in terms of its thoughtfully crafted itineraries, there being five circuits to choose from. India, with a heritage as old as civilization, a land which bears testimony to the footprints of various rulers and dynasties, is an enticing pot-pourri of varied languages and cultures. The train, in all its splendour, is a magnificent site to behold as it makes its way through the vast Indian landscape, embarking on a journey comprising any one of the five luxury tour circuits on wheels that it offers. The train has fourteen coaches of which there are five deluxe coaches, six junior suite coaches, two suite coaches and one presidential suite coach. The lavishly done interiors with distinct themes, supported by the latest international safety features such as electronic smoke detection system, CCTV, RFID door locks and pneumatic suspension for superior ride comfort go a long way in ensuring a truly comfortable, trouble free, royal experience. Each cabin of the train is equipped with state of the art facilities that include Wi-Fi Internet, live television, LCD screen, direct dial international telephone facility, DVD player, wardrobe, personal electronic safe and cabin controlled air conditioning. The attached bathrooms are modern and come with a shower cubicle, running hot and cold water, W.C and basin. There is the added luxury of a bathtub in the Suite coaches and the Presidential Suite. The individual temperature control is an inherent feature of all passenger cabins - the first of its kind in India. The large panoramic windows are a design marvel and provide an unforgettable experience of being able to observe India in all its moods and colours from the comfort of one’s cabin or suite. Each coach is attended to by personal valets who provide attentive, unobtrusive, round the clock services making for a truly comfortable and smooth travel. The five Deluxe coaches comprise of four cabins each and are named after precious gems, namely, Hakik(Agate), Firoza(Torquoise), Katela(Amethyst), Beruz(Aquamarine) & Pitoniya(Bloodstone). In all, there are twenty deluxe cabins, of which twelve are twin bedded and eight double bedded with an individual cabin area of 112 sq. ft. Each Junior Suite Coach consists of three cabins with attached baths. There are eighteen such cabins with a cabin area of 150 sq. ft. each, of which, twelve are twin bedded and six double bedded. The six train coaches of Junior Suites take their names from the precious gems namely - Moti(Pearl), Panna(Emerald), Manik(Ruby), Gomed(Hessonite), Moonga(Coral) & Pukhraj(Saphire). Each Suite Coach consists of two suites with separate living and bedroom areas. With a cabin area of 220 sq. ft. all the four suites are double bedded and have the provision of a sofa and writing table in the living room. The suite rooms are provided with additional features such as complimentary mini-bar and bath tub. Heera(Diamond) & Neelam(Blue Saphire) are the precious gems which lend their names to these two coaches. The Presidential Suite on-board this first class tourist train has 448 sq. ft of cabin area - the only one of its kind among the international trains. It is aptly named Navratana(nine precious gems) and has a living cum dining room and two bedrooms with attached bathrooms which also have bathtubs. The bedrooms are twin bedded and double bedded and have the additional facility of mood lighting. The living cum dining area is equipped with a sofa, writing table, mini-bar and internet facility. The guests on-board the Presidential suite have an exclusive twenty four hour personal valet dedicated to catering to their every need. All this definitely strives towards a ‘Maharaja-like’ experience, making it a totally unforgettable experience - one that dreams are made of.
Guests aboard the Maharajas’ Express can avail the facilities of two fine dining restaurants namely, Mayur Mahal and Rang Mahal; each characterized by a unique theme. ‘Mayur Mahal’ (Peacock Palace) is named after the national bird of India, the beautiful and majestic peacock, which is locally called Mayur. On the other hand, ‘Rang Mahal’, which literally means ‘The Palace of Colours’, is distinguished by its hand painted fresco ceiling. The rich furnishings and décor of these restaurants match their respective themes. For those who prefer an intimate meal, seating for two is available while those wanting the company of friends and family can choose a table for four. The tables are large allowing for adequate leg space and the two restaurants can comfortably accommodate forty two passengers each at any given time. The menu is different everyday and comprises of a delectable mix of international and Indian cuisines. The guests can also choose a wine from the wide selection present on board. The immaculate table settings, crested, gold-plated crockery and liveried attendants along with soothing piped music, together combine to create an environment that is genteel in feel, leading to a really satisfying, royal experience. The two restaurants are interconnected by a state of the art kitchen car fitted with an infra-red salamander, gravity feed slicer, combi-steamer, planetary mixer, counter-top fat fryer, front loading dish-washer, freezer cabinet and induction cook tops. It is from here that the highly accomplished chefs dish out a variety of cuisines that are comparable with the best. There are two lounge and bar cars, namely, The Rajah Club and Safari Bar. The Rajah Club is a lounge extraordinaire with comfortable club armchairs, providing a casual, laidback all day experience. The well stocked bar offers a range of speciality wines, spirits, alcohol and beers. Guests can unwind here over a drink, read the newspaper or select from the fine collection of books and magazines. It also shares space with ‘Sandouk’, a high-end boutique where one can pick up jewellery, paintings, etc. The Safari Bar is a unique bar with a special theme based on adventure motifs as the name suggests. The range of exotic drinks, cocktails and snacks, made available in a semi-formal atmosphere by the discreet attendants, is a reminder of the old world charm and hospitality. Passengers can either choose from the exclusive collection of books and periodicals or opt for indoor games. This bar also serves as a venue for festive events and corporate meetings.
