Deccan Odyssey was the brainchild of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) who drew their inspiration from the huge success of India’s first luxury train the 'Palace on Wheels'. Armed with the idea of showcasing the south western part of the country through a luxury rail journey MTDC and the Indian Railway Ministry signed a MOU in the year 2001 and work began to turn this vision into a reality.

To match up with the best luxury trains of the world Eg:  Orient Express of Europe and the Blue Train of South Africa, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) got down to business in 2002 and in the later part of 2003, the dream began taking the shape of a “Blue Limousine on wheels”.  The train received a lot of appreciation both for its design and construction. was and not to mention, the embodiment of the designs stole everyone's vision when it was placed into the tracks. The train was fitted with every modern amenity to make a guest’s stay onboard as comfortable and luxurious as possible. To match up with the amenities, the Taj Group of Hotels was commissioned to offer 5 star hospitality facilities to guests onboard. The Deccan Odyssey was now ready to roll.

The journey of Deccan Odyssey began on 16th January, 2004 from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai and ever since it has been part of many memorable memories for thousands of guests.
